The fifteenth day of the seventh month according to Chinese lunar calendar

In ancient times, it was called Zhongyuan Festival and commonly termed as Ghost Festival. On this day, common folks would set a table wth sacrificial objects and burn mock bank-notes to pay homage to their ancestors. Wealthy families would hold a Menglan meeting and invite monks to redeem lost souls by chanting sutras. In the course of paying homage to ancestors, egg-plants are cut into slices and fried lightly together with flour, resulting in “Egg-plant cakes” which are said to be used as rations for ancestors to attend Menglan meeting. On that very evening, lotus-flower lanterns in five colors would be put on the river, commonly called “Zhaihegu” which is said to be able to rescue lonely souls and wild ghosts in the river.
