Zhanyuan Garden（Museum on the History of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom）

With a history of over 600 years and built under the Jiajing reign of the Qing Dynasty, Zhanyuan Garden was the Western Garden in the residence of Xu Da, Zhongshan King of the Ming Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, it was changed into the site for the Department of Administration. On his inspection tour in areas to the south of the Yangtze River, emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty once stayed in this garden and named it “Zhanyuan Garden” according to Su Dongpo’s verse of ”The jade hall is seemingly seen in the sky”. During the period of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, it was the seat of the residence for Eastern King and the residence for young Western King. During the period of the Republic of China, it was the site of the Governmental Office of Jiangsu Province and the Home Office of KMT government, etc.

It is composed of Zhanyuan garden and the Museum on the History of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. With spacious halls and charming ponds, Zhanyuan Garden is particularly famous for its rockeries from Taihu Lake, among which the most renowned are “Rockeries transported in groups” according to the order of emperor Huizong in the Song Dynasty. As the No. One garden in Nanjing, Zhanyuan is one of five famous gardens in areas to the south of the Yangtze River, together with Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai and Zhuozhengyuan Garden in Suzhou, etc. The Museum on the History of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom is the only museum specilizing in the history of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in China and the center for collecting and exhibiting data on the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
